Together We Can build immunity in our community

In November, Juneau County businesses, government agencies and healthcare providers teamed up to curb the spread of COVID-19 with the Together We Can campaign. Its goal was to reduce the negative impact the virus was having locally, and to unite the community around the shared goals of keeping kids in schools, helping area businesses remain open, and protecting first responders and medical resources. As expected, area residents stepped up to the challenge and made a positive impact.

As a new year begins, the agencies involved in the Together We Can initiative are once again asking for your assistance. Instead of working to simply slow the spread of the virus, the new goal is to defeat COVID-19 for good with widespread community vaccination.

The best way to take down an enemy is to use every weapon that is made available to you. When it comes to fighting COVID-19, handwashing, social distancing and wearing a mask are still effective tools. The vaccine provides an additional, life-saving shield of protection that should not be ignored. The more people who utilize all of the tools that exist, the more likely the community is to develop a strong defense against this deadly virus.

The vaccine is currently being provided to healthcare workers, first responders and others who live and work in high-risk environments. General public distribution is likely to be available in the spring or summer, although some specific groups may have the opportunity to receive the vaccine sooner. While vaccination is not yet widely available to the public, there is still work to do.

While you wait for your chance to be vaccinated, take the time to prepare. Learn what you can, and share that information with others so that more and more members of the community will recognize the importance of being vaccinated when they have the opportunity.
