Transparency Requirement

In 2018, CMS announced updated guidelines for hospitals to comply with the Transparency Requirement of the Affordable Care Act. The goal is to give Americans the ability to learn the cost of a hospital item or service before receiving it.

In 2021, each hospital operating in the United States was required to provide pricing information online in two ways:

1. As a comprehensive machine-readable file with all items and service
2. In a display of shoppable services in a consumer-friendly format.
