Communication Disorders
Speech, voice, and language disorders are serious,
treatable conditions that affect 14 million Americans. These disorders affect
people of all ages. For most people, speaking comes naturally. When someone has
a speech or language problem, expressing any thought can be a struggle. Speech
and language disorders can result form a variety of causes. Congenital problems,
accidents and strokes can all cause speech/language problems. These disorders
can limit academic achievement, social adjustment and career advancement.
Fortunately, most people with speech and language problems can be helped. Even
if the problem cannot be eliminated, a Speech Pathologist can teach people with
speech and language problems strategies to help them compensate.
Common speech and language disorders include an
inability to comprehend or understand what others say, an inability to produce
sounds correctly, impairing one’s ability to produce speech than can be
understood by others, stuttering, and voice disorders. Aphasia is a
speech/language disorder that frequently occurs after a stroke or brain injury.
People with aphasia usually can think clearly, however their ability to
understand speech and/or their ability to express themselves is impaired.
Speech/Language Pathologists are the professionals
who treat all types of speech, language and related disorders, including
swallowing disorders.
Anyone who has difficulty producing speech or who
has difficulties understanding speech should consult a Speech/Language
Pathologist. Communication is very important for everyone of any age therefore,
these problems should not be ignored.
