When someone has a speech or language problem, expressing any thought can be a struggle. Speech and language disorders can result form a variety of causes. Congenital problems, accidents and strokes can all cause speech/language problems. These disorders can limit academic achievement, social adjustment and career advancement. Fortunately, most people with speech and language problems can be helped. Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, a Speech Pathologist can teach people with speech and language problems strategies to help them compensate.

Common speech and language disorders include an inability to comprehend or understand what others say, an inability to produce sounds correctly, impairing one’s ability to produce speech than can be understood by others, stuttering, and voice disorders. Aphasia is a speech/language disorder that frequently occurs after a stroke or brain injury.
