Chris Eckerman, D.P.M.

Chris Eckerman, D.P.M., became a member of the Mile Bluff Medical Center medical staff this month. He is a graduate of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago.

A native of Stewartville, Minnesota, he graduated from high school with a class of about 130. In high school he competed in wrestling, cross country and football. In addition, he played saxophone in the marching band as well as in the jazz band.

Stewartville is a town of about 5,000 population and is located right on the interstate just south of Rochester.

Chris did his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse, where he got a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. After his graduation there, he spent two years working for Gundersen Clinic in their research and development laboratory. While there he worked mostly on projects involving Lyme Disease.

Following medical school, Dr. Eckerman did his residency at Thorek Hospital in Chicago. He spent two years as a surgical resident, working mostly on foot and ankle problems.

He looks forward to doing surgery at Mile Bluff. The new surgery wing is ". . .excellent, so very new, so very nice and really spacious."

When asked what areas of podiatry he is most interested in, he said, "I am very interested in ankle trauma and fractures, and flat foot and fore foot reconstruction."

He estimated that about 35 percent of his patients will be diabetes sufferers seeing him for foot care. He pointed out the importance of proper foot care for those who have diabetes. "If you are diabetic," he said, "you really need to come in and see a podiatrist on a regular basis. If you do that, chances are your feet will be fine."

When Chris was asked what influenced him to practice at Mile Bluff Medical Center, he said: "Randy Brandt, who is a physician assistant on the staff here, attended UW-LaCrosse at the same time I did, and we’ve been friends since then."

He added: "When Randy knew I had finished my residency and was looking for a place to practice, he suggested I come to Mile Bluff Medical Center and talk to some people here."

After talking to President Dan Manders and Richard Langen, a podiatrist on the staff, Chris was invited to join the Mile Bluff Medical Center staff.

"I was greatly impressed with Mile Bluff Medical Center," he said, pointing out that the facility is ". . .wonderful, up to date, outstanding for a community of this size." He added: "The people I have met here have been great; very friendly, very helpful."

Dr. Eckerman’s wife, Bobbi, is an occupational therapist in the Rehabilitation Department of Mile Bluff Medical Center. The Eckerman’s like what they have seen of Juneau County, and have purchased a home in Mauston for themselves and their 8-month-old son, Joshua.

When asked about leisure time activities, Dr. Eckerman said: "Most of my leisure time now involves spending time with him [Joshua]; he demands a lot of attention."

When they do get time, Chris and Bobbi enjoy outdoor activities.

Chris is just one of the new faces on the medical staff at Mile Bluff. He is now seeing patients. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with him, call 847-5050 today.
