Mile Bluff honors Carol Wilkinson for her
volunteer efforts
By
Amanda Emery
During the month of March, Mile
Bluff - Crest View Nursing Home is shining a spotlight on Carol Wilkinson
of New Lisbon, for her volunteer work!
Carol began singing for church services at the former Pleasant Acres
Nursing Home in New Lisbon when she and her husband retired and moved to
the area from Illinois in 1989. When Crest View opened in 2001, she
continued to share her time with residents there. Carol says, “I chose
Crest View as a place to volunteer because of the old nursing home
closing.” She continued with, “I can’t just sit home; I feel like I have
this gift for singing and want to share it with others. I enjoy seeing
the residents happy during their
church services; I like to see them smile.”
Although it seems Carol is a natural
choir singer, she says it took a little pushing from a dear friend before
she got involved at the nursing homes. “Since I was a little girl, I have
enjoyed singing, especially hymns. One day a close friend said to me that
she was going to the nursing home to sing for church services and
suggested that I join her. I did, and the rest is history. I am so glad
she asked me to join her because now I just enjoy it so much.”
In addition to donating her time to
Crest View, this active woman also sings for patients at the veterans’
medical center in Tomah during its church services and volunteers her time
at the food pantry in New Lisbon. She continues to sing in the choir at
the New Lisbon United Methodist Church as well. During the summer months,
Carol and her husband Otto also like to camp with the Jackpine Travelers.
For over 20 years Carol worked for an
optical company. Now that she is retired, the only thing she enjoys more
than volunteering her time, is spending it with family, which includes
four children, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and five
step great-grandchildren. It is easy to see why Carol has earned a
reputation as a “great hugger.”
Over the years, Carol has impacted the
lives of many different individuals. As an organization, Mile Bluff would
like to take this opportunity to thank her for sharing her love of music
and singing, and for making a difference to numerous nursing home
residents. Please join the medical center in recognizing Carol for her
volunteer efforts.
