Mile Bluff shines the volunteer spotlight on Michele Szymaszek during the month of July! By Amanda Emery
For the past three years, Michele has been coming to the medical center in Mauston about once a week to help in the medical library. She explains, “I help Martha [Airth-Kindree, Library Director/Grant Writer] by making copies of articles, taking inventory of magazines, and doing other various tasks that need to be done.” She continued to say that the thing she enjoys most about giving of her time at Mile Bluff, is working with her supervisors. “I would have to say my favorite part about volunteering at Mile Bluff would be having the ability to work one-on-one with Martha and Norma [Miller, Education Coordinator]; they are just great individuals to be around.” Martha and Norma say they feel the same way about Michele as well. When asked how important she is to the overall function of the department, Martha had this to say, “Thanks to all her help cataloging journals, Mile Bluff will be much more efficient partners with the National Library of Medicine and other health science libraries across the country. Michele is great! We really appreciate her hard work and all of the extra effort she puts in.” Michele attributes one special event to her to choosing the medical center as a place to volunteer, the first annual Women’s Night Out! She explains, “I started volunteering in the Acute Care Department at Mile Bluff. Shortly after starting there, I heard that the Juneau County Women’s Health Initiative was organizing a women’s health event, and I asked if they would need any help with planning it. I had attended events similar to this in the Milwaukee area and knew they were a lot of fun - as well as a lot of work. The committee - which included Martha and Norma - welcomed my help, and ever since then I have been helping in the library.” This stay-at-home mother and wife has always used volunteer opportunities as a way to give back to her community. Prior to moving to Mauston when her husband’s job brought the couple to the area, Michele volunteered at her children’s school in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. When she’s not busy volunteering or taking care of her family, Michele says she enjoys quilting. With the hard work and dedication that she has put in over the past few years, Michele has been a valuable asset to the medical library at Mile Bluff. The next time you see her around the medical center, please join the staff members of Mile Bluff in congratulating Michele on being recognized during the month of July for her volunteer efforts!
