Mile Bluff names July volunteer of the month

By Katie Mead

Mile Bluff Medical Center has named Betty Johnson as the July volunteer of the month.

For the last two and a half years, Betty has been found every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the nurses’ station in the Acute Care department at Mile Bluff.  “I used to enter all of the patient vitals until they computerized the system,” explains Betty. “Now I check to see if the paperwork is with the right charts, and I file lab results.  Occasional they will call me in to sit with a patient when the nurses are unavailable to do so.”

“I started volunteering because I needed something to do,” admits Betty. “My grandchildren had the audacity to go to school and I wanted and needed to feel useful.”

Betty has had a great experience volunteering at Mile Bluff Medical Center. “I like the people I work with and its nice to know I’m doing something good,” adds Betty. “I appreciate that everyone here at Mile Bluff has been very patient in showing and helping me to do my job right.”

When she isn’t volunteering Betty stays busy following her grandchildren to their different sporting events. “My granddaughter plays softball for UW-Platteville and I have another granddaughter who just graduated heading there too.  I like to go to as many of their games as I can.”   Before the girls went to college, Betty went to all of their volleyball, basketball and softball games in high school.  She attends her two grandsons’ swimming meets and other summer games as well.  Betty also enjoys camping with her family and going to church at East Lemonwier Lutheran Church.

“I love to cook and bake,” confesses Betty. “I just finished making two graduation cakes for my granddaughter.  I also love to make pies; I’m a very good pie maker and my family enjoys the end results.”

There are many great opportunities available for people, such as Betty, to help others at Mile Bluff.  If you would like to donate time at Mile Bluff Medical Center, contact Reverend Fairchild at 608-847-1285. If interested in becoming a volunteer at Mile Bluff’s Crest View Nursing Home, please call Lorraine Anderson at 608-562-3667.  For opportunities at Mile Bluff’s Fair View Nursing Home, call Jill Finley at 608-847-1290.
