- Mile Bluff Medical Center

- Dr J.S. Hess Sr. founder of Hess Memorial Hospital came to Mauston in
1883.
- He practiced as a physician and surgeon for the next 42 years.
- In 1902 he bought a store building and residence and remodeled it into
what was know as Mauston Hospital
|

- In 1923 Dr Hess built the original Hess Memorial Hospital.
- In 1935 Dr Hess retired
- Dr. J S Hess Jr. became the owner
- In 1959 the City of Mauston purchased the hospital and formed a
Governing Board of Directors consisting of eleven members

- In 1963 the need for a new hospital and beds for the elderly became
obvious. A fund raising drive was
organized.
- All but nine rooms of the old hospital where converted into long term
care facility. The new building
was constructed immediately adjacent and connected to the old building
- The hospital and long term care facility shared management, heating, and
maintenance and were serviced by one kitchen
- The combined total of beds was 91
- ( 46 hospital and 45 nursing
home)

- In 1963 the new Hess Memorial Inc.
Obtained the hospital from the City of Mauston
- The original board of directors were V.M. Griffin MD President, William Rothe Vice President, Robert
Jorgenson secretary and Mrs Kurt Gebhart
- Other Members included W Blumer, CJ Laridaen DVM, Lawrence Larsen,
Reverend Emil Pedersen, Martin Roth Sr. Phillip Walsh and Henry Wells

- The cost of renovation the old hospital compared to building new was so
high a new site was chosen for a new facility
- By 1977 the need for expansion or a new facility was apparent
|

- Following a successful fund drive entitled “Project 80” a new
hospital and nursing home
(Fairview Nursing home were built accessed from Juneau County Fair
Grounds on Highway 58.

- Ground breaking for Terrace Heights Retirement Community occurred in May
1992
- The first renters moved in on November 20th, 1992
|

- Terrace Heights consists of 34
one and two bedroom apartments designed
to promote freedom and independence. Services include meals, bus transportation,
scheduled activities and emergency call system and well as maintenance
of building and grounds.

- In November 1991 the Elroy Family Medical Center opened in Elroy
|

- January 1995 Necedah Family Medical Center opened in Necedah
|
|

- April 1996 to July 1996 Hess Memorial Hospital began utilizing the newly
completed expansion on the first and second floors
|

- Fair View Nursing home is also extensively remodeled
|
|

- A 6 million dollar expansion of the Medical Centers surgical area was
competed in June 2001.
- The one story addition provides 16,00 sq feet for three new operating
rooms

- Crest View opened November 1, 2001
- The new facility was a joint venture of Juneau County and Mile Bluff
Medical Center.
- Crest View is owned and operated by Mile Bluff Medical Center. ^
- Sixty beds are Long Term Skilled nursing facility including a 18 bed
Dementia care unit
- 12 Bed are a Community Based Residential facility.

- Mile Bluff Medical Center, as a community health resource center, will
serve in a leadership capacity to facilitate the delivery of healthcare
and medical services, including care for the elderly and home care to
residents of and visitors to Juneau County and surrounding counties. As
part of this mission the Mile Bluff Medical Center intends to facilitate
confidential delivery of quality healthcare in a professional and timely
manner by maintaining dedicated compassionate and will trained medical
staff and employees; progressive, professional management and modern
equipments
- Mile Bluff Medical Center through its Quality Improvement Program, will
strive to continuously improve the quality of care delivered

- Mile Bluff Medical Center and all who are associated with it, shall
accept responsibility for providing care and comfort for the total
person embracing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each
patient and will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, age,
handicap, national origin or religious background
- Mile Bluff Medical Center shall participate in activities designed and
carried on to promote the general health of the community
- Mile Bluff Medical Center shall cooperate with other health care
organizations when the opportunity arises to better serve the community
as long as it is not against the interest of the medical center
- Mile Bluff Medical Center is organized exclusively for charitable,
scientific and educational purposes as a not-for-profit corporation

medical center with personalized care, outstanding services and advanced

grounded in a strong tradition of patient focused care, will be the
first choice for health and medical services in Juneau County and its

urban hospitals, provders and clinics such as UW Health, the Marshfield
Clinic, Wisconsin Heart, Mayo and Gunderson Lutheran to improve the
effectiveness of the medical center’s services. These key services will reflect the
changing needs of the region’s population. Partnerships need not be exclusive,
unless essential and competitions with services will be maintained to
the communities benefit
- Strong Local Healthcare Network: Mile Bluff Medical Center’s services
will be utilized by regional communitites in providing state-of the –art
technologies and procedures close to home and providing a local
continuum of care. This is
especially true in surrounding areas with critical access hospitals
having limited services
