HAND-IN-HAND PARENTING PROGRAM - For more information and to register, call 608-847-1013.  New parents are continually learning about how to raise a child, and questions may arise as parents undertake this new life venture.

What should I do if my child is choking?

How should I handle all of the advice I’m given about raising my baby?

How can baby sign-language work for me?

To assist you during the first year of your baby’s life, Mile Bluff offers the Hand-in-Hand parenting program.  It is designed to help provide you with answers for dealing with some of the most common situations that arise during your child’s first 12 months of life.

The Hand-in-Hand program is held the second Monday of every month, beginning at 4:30 pm.  On Monday, February 13, the session will focus on immunizations.  Upcoming classes will center infant massage and how to communicate with a newborn.

If you are interested in learning more about the Hand-in-Hand program or would like to register for the February 13 session, call 608-847-1013.

Classes offered to expectant parents

Learn about childbirth, feeding your baby and what to expect after delivery

Childbirth is a miraculous experience, and it can be greatly enhanced by attending the classes offered by Mile Bluff Medical Center’s Obstetrics (OB) Department.  Mile Bluff provides this five-week educational program to help you prepare for childbirth, make feeding decisions and your transition from hospital to home after your delivery.

Throughout the course of the program, you will discover fascinating facts about pregnancy and birth while enjoying the company and support of other expecting couples. The classes are open to all, and will be beneficial for first-time parents, as well as for those who are simply looking for a ‘refresher’ course.  The upcoming sessions will be held in three area locations from 7 to 9:15 pm.

·                     Moundview Memorial Hospital, Friendship, starting Monday, February 13

·                     Mile Bluff – Necedah Family Medical Center, Necedah, starting Tuesday, February 14

·                     Mile Bluff Medical Center, Mauston, starting Thursday, February 16

Three of the five classes are dedicated to preparing you for childbirth.

Prepared childbirth topics include:

·                             Anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, labor and delivery

·                             The coach’s role as an informed and active participant during labor and delivery

·                             Local birthing practices, including hospital facilities, rooming-in, sibling visitation, etc.

·                             Use of medications, anesthesia and other pain-control measures

·                             Cesarean (c-section) birth

·                             Characteristics of the newborn

Another session will focus on feeding your baby.  This session is designed to support you in making the decision to breast or formula-feed your child.  Instructors will discuss each of the methods in order to help you pick which is right for you and your baby.

To help make your transition from hospital to home as smooth and anxiety-free as possible, one class will center on what you can expect after delivery.

After-delivery topics include:

·     How to care for your body as it recovers from delivery and returns to its pre-pregnant state

·     How to care for your baby, including bathing, diapering, caring for the umbilical cord

·     Circumcision decision and after-care

·     What to do when your baby is ill

·     Immunizations

·     Safety concerns

Mile Bluff offers these childbirth education classes as a community service.  The program is free of charge to women receiving maternity care at Mile Bluff Clinic, New Lisbon Clinic, Elroy Family Medical Center, Delton Family Medical Center and Necedah Family Medical Center.  Women obtaining prenatal care elsewhere are welcome to attend classes for a small fee.

Call 608-847-1013 to register for one of the upcoming sessions. Another round of classes will be offered in March. Please note that you must sign up for a program that is completed before you are due to deliver.
