Minnesota students entertain at Terrace Heights Retirement Community By Amanda Emery
On March 25, the tenants of Terrace Heights Retirement Community were treated to some musical entertainment by a group of Minnesota choir students. The Bel Canto Choir (composed of tenth through twelfth grade girls) from Roseville Area High School in Roseville, Minnesota performed a short show of beautiful a cappella music. Under the direction of their choir instructor, Jami Lercher, the girls performed a variety of songs. Selections included a piece sung in the Czech language entitled Hoj, Hura Hoj by Otmar Macha, Family Tree by Stephen Hatfield (a song that celebrated women’s sacrifices through the years), as well as a number that contained no actual words, but instead used a string of syllables to mimic the sounds of an Irish fiddle called Mouth Music by Keane and Faulkner. The choir is made up of a diverse group of girls who audition each spring to participate in the program. As part of the curriculum, the choir meets every day for a full academic year. In 2007, it began to tour throughout the Midwest. The girls have traveled from their hometown of Roseville - a suburb of the Twin Cities - to places such as Des Moines, Chicago, Madison, and now Mauston, sharing their love of music with people such as the tenants at Terrace Heights.
