Mile Bluff provides training in the operating room

Mile Bluff continually opens its doors to provide educational opportunities to individuals working toward a career in healthcare.  This spring, aspiring anesthetist, DuWayne Shelly, spent eight weeks training with the surgical team in Mauston.

With three general surgeons and a number of specialty physicians on staff, as well as a variety of visiting specialists who perform procedures in the operating room, Mile Bluff’s Surgical Department offered DuWayne the chance to gain on-the-job experience in variety of different settings and situations.

To become an anesthetist, he first had to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree, and then become a licensed registered nurse.  After having at least one year of critical care experience, DuWayne then had to complete an anesthetist master’s program.  He explains the final steps in the educational process, “Once an individual has earned board certification, he or she can practice just about anywhere in the United States, as long as that person is licensed as an advanced practice nurse in the state he or she wishes to work.”

With DuWayne nearing the end of his schooling, it was necessary for him to work side-by-side with established anesthetists.   While training at Mile Bluff, he enjoyed the independence he had among his mentors.  “I was given a lot of autonomy, even as a student.  I had the opportunity to do what I felt was right for my patients, and I appreciate that.”

The experience he’s gained in Mauston will certainly be an asset to DuWayne as he establishes his own practice when he graduates from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in August.  He says, “After graduation, I already have a job to practice in my hometown, Marshfield, Wisconsin.”

Mile Bluff has been helping students, like DuWayne, obtain hands-on training to help them transition from the educational to the professional world.  The medical center wishes DuWayne nothing but the best as he finishes his studies and begins his career as an anesthetist.
