Rhonda Larson: Proud to work at Mile Bluff Medical Center by Amanda Emery
One such employee is Cancer Care Director, Rhonda Larson. She states, “In this job, I get to know my patients on an entirely different level than I would in any other setting. I strongly believe that because of the patient relationships I am able to form, I get much more from the people who utilize our services than they get from me. I really believe that I found my niche in Cancer Care.” She continued, “It can be a very positive experience when I see one of my patients thriving and responding well to a course of treatment. In our department, we are essentially an advocate for patients and act as the ‘go-between’ for the oncologist, primary care provider and the patient. We do everything from administering chemotherapy treatments to working with families if they are in need of transportation or financial assistance. We also set up dietary or rehabilitation requests for patients as needs arise.” Although she enjoys her work, Rhonda points out that it can also be challenging at times. “However, you also know that every patient you see is not going to receive great news; and that can be hard for me to hear, as well as them.” Rhonda has been the Director of the Cancer Care Department for the past three years, but she started her employment with Mile Bluff over seven years ago as a registered nurse in the Obstetrics/Surgical Department. When asked why she chose Mile Bluff as a place to work, she had this to say, “I grew up in Mauston; so it was close to my home, family and friends. I had always received high-quality healthcare when I personally needed to use the services at Mile Bluff, so I never really thought about practicing anywhere else.” She continued to say that she is proud to be part of the Mile Bluff team. Rhonda explains, “I have stayed here all these years because of the people I work with and the satisfaction I get from knowing I have done my job well. I take pride in my job. Mile Bluff is a great place to work because the administrators and my supervisors trust and value my opinions about how to make my department the best it can be. This helps me to know that I am special to the organization, and I feel that these are opportunities that I wouldn’t be able to get at any other company.” Rhonda continued, “In my previous jobs [not in healthcare], the focus was more on numbers and the bottom line instead of on people. The opposite is true at Mile Bluff. This organization really cares about the people it has working for it, and that makes me proud to say that I am a team member at Mile Bluff Medical Center.” Rhonda is just one of the many individuals who is proud to be an employee at Mile Bluff. In an effort to share the stories of these people, each quarter the organization will highlight a staff member - such as Rhonda - who wants to share his/her story about working at Mile Bluff.
