Jack Strong, MD:  Forever in our hearts

By Kathy Behnke

Doctor Jack Strong began his Mauston practice in 1958, bringing with him his passion for people and a desire to make the community a better place.  Those who knew him, knew that he was a man who gave generously to others - both personally and professionally.  The community is saddened by his recent passing, and is grateful for the positive impact he had on those he served.

He was a key ingredient in keeping the medical community going for a number of decades.  His work helped bring providers to Mauston such as Keith and Nancy Ness, Eric Heaney, Leon Radant, and more.  He was active in the planning and building of the hospital at its current location, and passed on his values to the providers that served the community after him.  Doctors Keith and Nancy Ness had this to say:  “Doctor Strong was a valued mentor and friend.  He was instrumental in recruiting physicians to Mauston, and served as an excellent role model for those of us who followed him.”

During his career, Dr. Strong took on a number of leadership roles - both in the medical and local communities.  He served as President of the Juneau County Medical Society, Chief of Staff of Hess Memorial Hospital, and President of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.  He also served as president of both the Mauston School Board and Mauston Public Library Board of Trustees.  Additionally, he served on the Human Services Board of Juneau County, and was appointed by Governor Thompson to the Board of Governors of the State Insurance Commission.  Prior to and after retiring in 1986, he was Assistant Clinical Professor for the University of Wisconsin Medical School.

Even in his passing, the doctor is still carrying out his mission to help others.  He requested that his body be donated to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and that memorials be given in his name to the Mile Bluff Medical Center Foundation as well.

Mile Bluff will be forever grateful to Dr. Strong for being the community-minded physician he was.  He was a pillar of Mile Bluff Medical Center and the Mauston community, and will be greatly missed.
