Winter decorations at Terrace Heights Retirement Community become tradition By Amanda Emery It wouldn’t quite be the holiday season at Terrace Heights Retirement Community in Mauston without the Christmas village that is set up each year around this time. Terrace Heights’ manager, Shari Hanson, explains how the tradition got started, “Several years ago, a tenant donated eight to ten village pieces from her own collection to be put on display in the dining room for everyone to enjoy. The idea was a huge success with the tenants. Everyone liked it so much, that the following year the tenants pooled their money together and expanded the village. One of the first items purchased was a train. Several more houses, businesses, trees and accessories were added to the collection as well.”

Shari says that she and her staff look forward to putting the decorations up.
“Each year, I purchase another house or business to add to our village. The
entire thing has grown over the years, to the point that it takes two staff
members an entire day to get it set up and be operational. The tenants really
get anxious with anticipation for the day it is put together. They will stop
throughout the day and check our progress. It really is a joy for all of us to
have this wonderful Christmas village.”
