Mile Bluff welcomes Dr. Verma By Larry Arnold Dr. Sunil Verma from UW Health in Madison will begin seeing patients in August at the UW Specialty Clinic in Mauston. Dr. Verma is an otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) fellow. A fellow is a doctor who has completed his or her residency, is fully-trained to practice in his or her specialty, but is taking some time for extra study and/or research in a particular area of interest. He is presently doing a fellowship, studying disorders of the voice and swallowing, at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. A part of that fellowship includes spending time at the clinic in Mauston. He was born in Montreal, Canada, and came to this country, spending some time in Kentucky. Much of his childhood was spent in Fresno, California, where he attended high school. He then went to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, earning a double major in geography and chemistry. His studies there included a semester in Prague, Czech Republic. He attended medical school at the University of Southern California (USC), receiving his medical degree in 2004. He interned in general surgery at the USC School of Medicine, and recently completed his residency in otolaryngology there. He has written articles for a number of medical publications, dealing with a variety of procedures relating to his specialty. He also has lectured at meetings of several national medical organizations. Dr. Verma has been active in The Boy Scouts of America, and attained the Eagle Scout Award, which is the highest award in scouting. He is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Hindi. He is also an avid runner and tennis player. In addition to his interests in disorders of the voice and swallowing, he also is interested in sinus surgery and working with children, and after completing his fellowship, hopes to move back to California to practice. “We have a 15-month-old son, and it would be nice to be close to my folks,” he said. Dr. Verma’s wife Rakhee is presently doing a fellowship in radiology at UW-Madison. His father is a general practitioner in Selma, California, which is just outside of Fresno. His mother is trained as a pharmacist, but is currently managing his father’s office. When asked for his opinion about healthcare in this country he replied: “I agree we need to change because the system is out of control. In spite of that, we still are providing good healthcare.” After attending a medical staff meeting and being introduced to many of the physicians who practice at Mile Bluff, Dr. Verma commented: “I expected to see five or 10 doctors; I was amazed to see such a dynamic group of physicians.” Dr. Verma is joined by another new otolaryngology specialist, Dr. McCullock. Watch for further information on him, and please help Mile Bluff Medical Center welcome both specialty doctors to the Mauston community. |
