Virtual colonoscopy offered at MBMC Virtual colonoscopy (VC) is a medical imaging procedure which uses x-rays and computers to produce two and three-dimensional images of the colon (large intestine) from the lowest part (the rectum), all the way to the lower end of the small intestine, and display them on a screen. The procedure is used as a screening tool for colon cancer. The procedure is performed via computed tomography (CT), sometimes called a CAT scan. Mile Bluff is proud to announce that it offers VC technology in its Medical Imaging Department. The examination takes about 10 minutes and does not require sedatives or the use of a colonoscope. With this new technology, patients are able to return to their usual activities or go home after the procedure without the aid of another person. However, if abnormalities are found, a conventional colonoscopy must be performed (even that same day) so a radiologist is able to take tissue samples (biopsy) or remove polyps. Talk to your healthcare provider about scheduling your VC at Mile Bluff today. Check with your insurance provider to see if the procedure is included in your coverage. |
