Two of Mile Bluff’s visiting specialists retire in December

By Amanda Emery

Each and every day, the healthcare providers at Mile Bluff dedicate themselves to living out the organization’s mission statement, which says “Mile Bluff Medical Center is committed to providing compassionate and progressive care, improving the health and wellness of the community, and going beyond expectations in healthcare today and always.”  It is easy to see this in the fact that the medical center has nearly 30 family practice providers, three general surgeons, two surgical physician assistants, three urgent care providers, and 10 specialty doctors - including one orthopedic surgeon - on staff.  In an effort to serve the entire region, these men and women see patients at five different locations in the area: Elroy, Lake Delton, Mauston, Necedah and New Lisbon.  In addition to these providers, Mile Bluff has partnered with the University of Wisconsin, Gundersen Lutheran and Marshfield Hospital and Clinics, to bring nearly 50 visiting specialists to Mauston, and in December, the medical center said good-bye to two of its long-time visiting specialists, Dr. Jack Lockhart and Dr. Stewart Taylor.

Jack Lockhart, MD

Even though there was snow coming down outside, members from Mile Bluff’s medical and administration teams gathered around a luau-themed cake to thank Dr. Jack Lockhart for his years of service, and to wish him well in his retirement.  On December 9, Dr. Lockhart - a rheumatologist that came to Mauston twice a month from Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse - saw his last patients at Mile Bluff Clinic.

Though not your traditional retirement party décor, the gathering was ideal for this Jimmy Buffet fan.  The personal touches carried over to the gift presented by Mile Bluff Clinic’s administrator, Carol Fronk, as she gave the doctor a sliver engraved yo-yo.  This unique toy may not be the most sought-after retirement gift, but this humble man was known to make his patients and support staff smile from time-to-time by performing a trick on the yo-yo.  He commented, “This means so much to me, that my colleagues in Mauston would remember me like this in my retirement.  I can also say that I will always cherish this yo-yo, and don’t think I will be using this one to practice tricks!”

He continued to say that he is leaving his patients in good hands with his successor, “I have confidence that the medical staff here will welcome Dr. Nada Al-Skaf just as warmly as they did me.  I also know that my patients will continue to receive the high-quality care they have become accustomed to by continuing their care with Dr. Al-Skaf.”

Stewart Taylor, MD

After serving Mauston and the surrounding communities for nearly 30 years, Dr. Stewart Taylor - orthopedic surgeon - performed his last procedure at Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston on December 28.  To wish him well in his retirement, and in an effort to show appreciation for his years of service to the organization, Mile Bluff held a small celebration in his honor on December 21.  The event was attended by many former and current colleagues; some even shared stories about this soft-spoken man.

During the reception, Dr. Timothy Bjelland, Medical Director, presented Dr. Taylor with a book on the history of the Civil War.  After Dr. Bjelland’s speech, the guest of honor responded with, “I just want to say thank you to all of the wonderful people I have worked with at Mile Bluff over the years.  I don’t have a speech prepared, but I can say that this is more than I expected.  Now that I am retiring, I will have time to read this book on the history of the Civil War - which is one of my favorite things to do as you all probably know.  All I can say is thank you, and I appreciate everything.”

Patients of Dr. Taylor’s can also be confident that their needs will continue to be met by Mile Bluff’s staff orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Robert Riedle.   Mile Bluff’s CEO and President James O’Keefe stated, “While Dr. Taylor has made a positive impact on his patients, and will be missed by the staff at Mile Bluff and members of the community, rest assured that we have an orthopedic surgeon on staff - Dr. Riedle - that is ready to accept new patients.”

Over the years both doctors Lockhart and Taylor have provided exceptional care to patients at Mile Bluff Medical Center and they will truly be missed in their respective practices.  The entire staff at Mile Bluff wishes these men well in their retirement.
