The surgical wing at Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston is a busy place, with a total of 1,802 surgical procedures performed in the last fiscal year. Of these 1,321 were in-patient and 481 were out-patient.

The total includes surgeries performed by the hospital’s surgical staff and specialists who see patients at Hess Memorial and perform surgeries in Mauston. In the past fiscal year, from October of 2007 through September of 2008, the busiest month was September, with 176 procedures. The monthly totals show a steady growth, which is expected to continue.

A significant number of these surgeries were performed by members of the visiting specialty staff. Most of the specialists come from UW Health in Madison, Gundersen Lutheran in LaCrosse, Wisconsin Heart in Madison, and the Marshfield Clinic.
