Mile Bluff Medical Center holds annual farmer screenings

By Amanda Emery

Mile Bluff Medical Center held free health screenings for area farmers on Thursday, December 3.  The eleven people who participated in the event were offered preventative exams from five different teams at Mile Bluff.  The results from these tests were used as a way to identify the risks posed on the farmers’ well-being due to the nature of their jobs.

Mile Bluff’s Respiratory Therapy Department offered basic breathing tests that measured the air volume and flow in the lungs. The calculations obtained helped in identifying any possible pulmonary issues that could be a result of environmental hazards.

Mile Bluff’s Audiology Department offered screenings to help farmers be proactive in preserving their hearing. Because they are at a higher risk for hearing loss due to the noise levels they are exposed to on a regular basis, it is recommended that farmers wear ear protection and have hearing exams performed annually.

Members from Mile Bluff’s Rehabilitation Department conducted screenings throughout the day as well.  Participants were checked for back and muscle injuries, and were provided with techniques to promote proper body mechanics, and methods for safe stretching and lifting to prevent injuries.

Also as a part of the screening day, farmers received free total cholesterol and blood sugar tests from the Laboratory Department, and blood pressure checks from the Health Promotion Department.

These free screenings offered by Mile Bluff Medical Center helped identify conditions that may have otherwise gone undetected.  The day resulted in over a 60 percent referral rate for more testing.  Three of the people examined were recommended for further care after blood pressure screenings, two for hearing analysis, and two for lung function measurements.

Mile Bluff offers this event annually as an educational tool for local farmers.  Participants receive information on staying healthy on the farm and are tested to assess their current health.  By teaching the skills necessary to prevent injury on the farm, the community is a safer, healthier place.
