Early childhood screenings held at Mile Bluff Medical Center By Amanda Emery
At the event, members from Mile Bluff’s physical therapy, audiology (hearing),
speech pathology and occupational therapy departments interacted one-on-one with
children to test their motor
After the exams were completed, ‘report cards’ were made and copies were sent to each child’s primary healthcare provider. In addition, if any area of concern was identified during the screening process, the children were given a referral to receive follow-up care. These special screening events are held twice a year and are offered to children ages birth to five years. Caregivers do not need to have specific concerns in order to have their children screened, it is simply a fun and free way for kids to be assessed by Mile Bluff’s team of healthcare professionals. At the recent event, half of the children who were evaluated were referred for further assessment or treatment in at least one of the areas tested. When delays are recognized and diagnosed in the early years, it makes it very possible for children to overcome the obstacles and get up-to-speed quickly.
