Dr. Sabey provides maternity care at Lake Delton

Hank is pleased with his care at MBMC

By Kathy Behnke

“This is the first hospital I’ve been to where the staff members are so courteous and comforting that you forget about your pain” commented cancer-survivor Hank Krass.

After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer nearly a year ago, Hank and his wife moved from their home in Arkdale, to Terrace Heights Retirement Community in Mauston.  A big move like that isn’t always easy, but Hank states that it was definitely the best thing for them.  “There was so much work to do at home.  Living at Terrace Heights allows us to give that up, and be close to Mile Bluff where I receive chemotherapy treatments.”

Hank and his wife especially appreciate the building and grounds maintenance at Terrace Heights during the snowy winter months.  The apartment complex also offers optional meals and transportation for those who are interested, as well as attached garage space for individuals who do have vehicles.

During a visit with New Lisbon students in June, Hank shared a little bit about his time in the Cancer Care Department at Mile Bluff.  “The staff here is so comforting and very well trained.  The nurses are truly concerned for you as a person, and are not afraid to let you know that.  A simple touch on the arm adds a human element that is so important to you as a patient.  Having someone to joke with you helps to make the pain go away.”

The relationships he has built with the staff in Cancer Care Department at Mile Bluff have been inspirational for Hank.  “The nurses make treatments cheerful for you.  It’s a bit ‘screwy,’ but I actually look forward to coming here because of how well I am treated.”  He went on to say how much it means to him to have healthcare professionals that care so deeply for him on a personal level. “They even make appointments for me.  I honestly can say that I’ve never experienced healthcare as great as this...ever!”

Cancer Care Director, Rhonda Larson, says that a big part of her work is getting to know patients and their families.  “It’s more than starting IVs and administering treatments.  We care for these individuals and make sure to do all we can to make this difficult time in their lives go as smoothly as possible.”

If you would like more information on the services available in Mile Bluff’s Cancer Care Department, call 608-847-9877.  If you are interested in learning about life at Terrace Heights Retirement Community, call 608-847-2377.

Photo Caption:  Earlier this year, New Lisbon students toured the Cancer Care Department at Mile Bluff, and made a donation to the patients.  Hank Krass was pleased to talk with students and show them how his chemotherapy treatments work.

Side noteA number of community members have expressed interest in forming a support group for individuals affected by cancer.  If you would consider attending a cancer support group at Mile Bluff, please call Rhonda at 608-847-9877.  A group will begin as soon as there is enough interest generated.  Watch for further details.
