A Second Chance By: Katie Mead
“My experience here has been a good one,” admitted Mike. “For the last two years I’ve sat in this chair for four hours a day, three times a week either watching TV or sleeping.” Now Mike can enjoy his mornings at home instead of coming to the dialysis department. On Thursday, July 2, Mike received the greatest gift of all, a new kidney. “My brother was tested in October, 2007 and he was a match! When I found out, I thought it was great, and he was excited too,” explained Mike. Healthy kidneys clean the blood, as well as regulate hormones that strengthen bones. When a person’s kidneys fail, harmful wastes begin to build in the body. Dialysis is a process that removes this waste and extra fluids from the blood stream. It also helps to keep a safe level of certain chemicals in the blood and controls blood pressure. The dialysis department at Mile Bluff Medical Center is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Since 1999, the department has had a mission to ensure high quality care for patients with renal (kidney) failure. The highly-trained staff takes pride in keeping a clean, safe environment which enables patients’ treatment to be as comfortable as possible. Patients work with nephrologists (a kidney specialist), registered nurses, dialysis technicians, social workers, and registered dietitians to ensure they are doing everything to stay healthy. After fully recovering from his surgery, Mike Fisher – an avid sportsman – would like to go out west. “It’s been 10 years since I’ve been out there. I’d like to do some hunting.” Mile Bluff wishes Mike the best of luck! For more information about the dialysis department at Mile Bluff Medical Center call, 608-847-6161 x 4670. |
